Vital Basic Principles in Leadership Which Leaders Must Learn Early On One Way or the Other

There are so many simple profound and practical lessons in the Word of God and as we study the call of Moses and everything that surrounded that call there are principles which can greatly help us in whatever leadership role we have in life.
It is possible to overlook ignore or miss the lessons and become wounded. That is why we have this Word. We do not need to be wounded in this way. There will be plenty of other wounds which we have to bear and which we are meant to bear.
After arguing with Almighty God, God tells Moses that he is appointing Aaron to be the mouthpiece. You will be the one with authority - you will carry the rod - you will be God to Aaron - you will tell him what to say - and you will put words in his mouth. You can check out all this in Exodus Chapter 4. Do read it. There is nothing but teaching and blessing in these words.
Aaron must have been very gracious indeed to have accepted all this from his wee brother. Moses was three years younger.
Just how do we react and respond when God calls in a very real and significant way?
At verse 18, we read that Moses went back to his father in law Jethro, and made a strange request, but Moses had the full approval of his father-in-law.
O to have the approval and commendation of parents when you are in the work of God wherever possible. That is a bonus - not many experience that - and we need all the bonuses going! Later, he advises Moses with good sound advice. "You go - my blessing be upon you - peace be with you - go in harmony."
Moses gets ready to leave for Egypt - the sign on the authority of God is in his hand - but then problems arise - they usually do. Have you found that? You have just been richly blessed and suddenly the situation changes!
Moses is reminded that he is going to have problems with Pharaoh. We need to remember that in all of this if Egypt represents a type of sin, then Pharaoh is a picture of the devil, and when we are on the business of Almighty God we are sure going to have problems with him. When we minister in the love of Jesus and in the power of the Holy Spirit, some will harden their hearts against us.
One of these recurring themes in these next seven chapters is "Go and you will be prevented and hindered!" That too is so strange but again it happens to be true in our experiences throughout life.
The new Pharaoh proved to be worse that the previous one who had sought to kill Moses. But Moses is told what to say, and what to do. The life of the man of God whether it is Moses - or David - or Elijah - or Peter or Paul - is seldom easy and straightforward.
Zipporah, Moses wife, did not like his Hebrew religion, and they had an argument over circumcision. Moses had married outside the family of faith, and that always ends with real problems. Had he compromised over the years on this important matter? For the sake of peace in his shepherd's household had he not pressed this point? It never pays to compromise.
The sign of the covenant had been neglected. It had to be faced and it is always harder to face later on if it has been compromisingly overlooked for a few years.
Moses was going to the people of God - as their leader - with uncircumcised sons.
Zipporah cuts the flesh of her sons - and cuts Moses heart with her tongue - "You bloody husband".
It is sad when someone so near and dear is antagonistic to the faith and it can cause casualties in the Kingdom of God.
The principle is - Moses, put things right before you go and seek to do this massive task for God. It is always better to stand for the principle at the beginning - no matter what the cost - but sometimes we do not know these principles at the beginning.
It cost Moses pain and loneliness, and it cost Zipporah from seeing the Hand of God mightily at work - because she did not go with her husband.
But he went and that is important.
With Aaron there is the reaction of affection. He tells Aaron everything, and reading between the lines you can almost hear Zipporah - "O you can get your brother to be with you to hold your hand".
It is significant that Moses and Aaron met at the spot of the burning bush. On they went to Egypt.
It was an important point - an important place - an important time - an important moment - an important experience. It was a historical turning point.
When the elders of the people gathered, everything was explained and the signs were performed and they believed. When they heard they worshipped.
God was visiting His people to rescue them. When they had been crying to Him in their prayers, He had been listening to even although they are unaware of it.
Unknown to them - He had been at work - He had seen - He had listened - He was there.
When God sees the need and decides to act - you worship - and in Christ Jesus not only has He visited us - but He has come to stay.
God got His way with Moses. When God calls and commissions you must go, even though you die. We are involved in the greatest work in the world, and we do not know all he is doing behind the scenes.
His word to us in this passage is - Go on - Do what you were told to do.
Two questions always arise. Dare I undertake this task? Dare I not undertake this task?
We are distinct from the world - our hearts being circumcised - and filled with the Holy Spirit.
At the end of all that, we see the Lord God Almighty and His Power and Peace flowing through these two men of God.

Leadership Journals

Leadership can be taught. There are some skills have to be learned for a good leadership. In some people these qualities are inborn but some people have to learn these skills.
What are the means to learn these skills?
Either you can watch a leader and learn from him. The other way is to learn the skills is from a leadership coach. Last but not least, is to learn these invaluable skills from a book or a journal.
There are umpteen journals available that are dedicated to the cause of leadership learning. These journals are the only places where one can learn newer and newer ideas. The sole aim of these journals is to work towards better leadership. A number of exponents in leadership training write in these journals.
This valuable advice is otherwise unavailable to everyone. One can exploit the information which is at your fingertip.
With the advent of internet and World Wide Web one can easily access all this information easily. All required information is just one click away. One cannot always have the assistance of a peer or a coach owing to one reason or the other. In such circumstances peer journals are the best way to acquire the information from the journals.
The leadership journals provide you the cutting edge information about the development of leadership. These help you gain a good understanding about what is leadership, the roles of mentors in leadership.
Leadership journals give information about what are the new trends in leadership and the information about communities that can help you to become a good leader.
The journals publish information in various categories like research, practice, commentary, and reviews. You can choose the information as per your needs from these categories.
The research section basically deals with theory based papers that debate and explores the methodological and theoretical issues concerning various issues and disciplines of leadership.
In these sections, you can find commissioned articles by leading authors on various topics related to leadership. They also contain debates about various issues regarding leadership.
The practice section contains some articles form practitioner researchers and academics. The section mainly deals with the practice of leadership among various sectors. These articles are subject to peer review and editorial review. This section is a treasure trove for aspiring leaders.
The commentary section has a provocative, timely and profound commentary on the contemporary leadership issues. This section can help you to keep pace with the changing trends in the area of leadership.
The review section encompasses the valuable information about the book that are of great help for a leader. The reviews are rigorous and concerned with the leadership education.
The articles which have undergone a meticulous peer review certainly help you to decide what you should read in order to keep in touch with modern developments in field of leadership.
Again it is important to note that though the journals are best mentors good leadership skills can only be achieved through practice. The journals only take care of the 'intellectual' side of your leadership but the 'action' comes through practice only.

Leadership and Creativity

Be it the field of science or technology or be it the field of arts or literature they survived because the creative leaders in these fields constantly bathed the humanity with new concepts and new ideas.
But in today's fast paced life when everything is measured in terms of profitability, people hesitate experimenting with new ideas for fear of failure, for fear of ridicule or for fear of losing their well established career.
Leaders since time immemorial have used creative ideas to further their causes; these leaders wrote the history of mankind and were always desirous to welcome new ideas for the benefit of the whole humanity.
When Mahatma Gandhi gave out the concept of non-violence, the world was taken aback. A revolution without violence, this was something that none had ever dreamed, but this single idea gave a new dimension to the modern struggle for justice.
Leadership and creativity often compliment each other. A leader should constantly evolve himself, he needs to constantly have innovative ideas; if he tries to survive on his old stereotypical image then it's just a matter of time when he will inculcated into history.
A leader should also encourage creativity. Any creative idea finds acceptance if it is able to make significant contribution to a person's life.
Creative ideas can be in any field; it can be in the field of science and technology, it can be in the field of arts and literature, it can be in the field of music and theater; inf act creativity depends on how deep a person can think, the field is absolutely immaterial when associated with creativity.
At present, leaders in many organizations try to adopt the same old method of leadership fearing that the new ideas may not bring the desired results; they think the new ideas would result in wastage of time, money and valuable resources.
Such concerns are completely misplaced; because history has numerous examples wherein we can see that a particular organization which was once a leader have withered into oblivion because of their unwillingness to be creative.
Those industries that have been innovative and valued creativity have not only survived the onslaught of time but today have become a behemoth. This is why great business leaders always valued creativity and have always encouraged it.
Being able to take risks is worthwhile as it helps in survival. Not only in business but in politics too; great leaders have shed the stereotypical ideas and have brought revolution with their all powerful new ideas.
New ideas indeed face lots of resistance because they are unproven. Purist fear them and many think that implementing them is similar to digging their own graves.
It comes down on the leaders to motivate their followers to accept new ideas; a leader is one whom the people believe and trust, whom they think has the capability to help them realize their dreams. So a leader should use their personal magnetism to spread hope and enthusiasm within their team.

Leaders Are Made, Not Born

All of us are born with one trait in common: potential. Of course there are many potentials, but the key in dealing with potential is the stimulus and environment that brings it out. In this way, you can look at all of the members of your organization as potential leaders. It's your job to provide the stimulus and environment that enables leaders' potential.
First, let's talk about leadership traits or characteristics. There are many schools of thought on which traits make the best leaders, but the most common traits tend to make sense. One trait is a sense of adventure or exploration - that's not to say that each person has to be a Sir Edmund Hilary. It means that leaders seek out the answers in their environment, whether it's Arctic exploration or the assembly line in a manufacturing company. Not only is there an urge to explore, but there's also a need or desire to innovate the findings. So leaders strive to determine why things work, but also want to improve them, to make them different, to make them new. Leaders must have an ability to influence through persuasion - this doesn't necessarily mean that each person will have a charismatic, verbal approach to persuasion, it just means that each leader, in his or her own way, will be able to influence people.
Another common characteristic to leaders is the courage to speak out - if leaders see through their exploration that things could be different, they are going to say something about it instead of sitting on that bit of information. Leaders also have a strong belief and enthusiasm in themselves and what they and their organizations are doing. These are not superhuman traits and characteristics. These are also not characteristics that one is born with or not - for example, if you grew up in an environment where risk-taking was considered foolish, you may not have a belief in yourself as a risk taker. But, in the right environment, who knows what your capabilities are?
So we've seen that leadership characteristics are most likely inherent and can be developed in the right environment. But how do we learn leadership? First of all, we learn leadership through observation and emulation. A potential leader will be on the constant lookout for someone to emulate - and it's your responsibility to lead the way. Some leaders learn through trial and error - think about the number of well-known inventors, authors, and even actors who have been rejected over and over again. With each rejection, these leaders adjusted something about their approach. Leaders learn through taking risks - potential leaders have already taken the time to examine their surroundings and look for ways to innovate. Taking the risk means a leader will speak out, persuade, or just make the change that leads to innovation. Finally, leaders learn through constant self-development. Leaders and potential leaders know that learning and development is a lifetime thing - it doesn't stop when one reaches a goal or a plateau. And leaders are on the lookout for ways to develop at all times.
We're all born with potential - and we can all develop the traits of leadership. That's where you come in. You must create an environment that encourages leaders to be made, otherwise your leaders will rot on the vine or seek out environments that are conducive to their development. How can you provide the right environment and the right stimulus to "make" leaders?
There are many ways to encourage a leader-based and entrepreneurial environment. First, you must constantly encourage people to take action. Remember that speaking out is a leadership characteristic - your encouragement will allow people to challenge the status quo, innovate old ways of doing things, and to persuade you and others to follow them. In the same vein, you must persist with ideas that come to you. When people begin speaking out, insist that they champion the idea. When the idea gets to your level, you must persist as well. What about failure? The culture you create should tolerate failure - not reward it, but tolerate it. That is to say, failure causes people to analyze the situation and fix the mistake. When innovation occurs, reward and promote the innovators. Many organizations fall into the trap of promoting because of time served or functional knowledge. If you are going to set up an environment that promotes leadership, you must promote the ones who speak out and make change - the ones who innovate.
An interesting, and sometimes difficult, way to promote the making of leaders is to allow the "skunkworks". When Lockheed was developing some of its groundbreaking aircraft, such as the P-38 and the U2, the "skunkworks" was an unofficial group that was pretty much free of red tape and free to work on secret projects. Management did not intervene as innovators got together under the radar to work on successful projects. How does this apply to you? Be aware that innovators will always be on the lookout for other innovators - don't try to sanction or sponsor every team. In this environment, the "skunkworks" will allow leaders and potential leaders to speak out, try new things, and look for new ways to innovate. Finally, you can provide an environment that promotes informality, both physically and emotionally. Try to knock down some of the old hierarchies that kept people from communicating - at the same time, make sure your physical space encourages hallway meetings, collaboration, and team interaction.
Leaders are definitely made - not born. But the environment will determine whether potential leaders can develop their talents - and it's your responsibility to provide it.

5 Most Effective Leadership Skills

While everyone wants to be an effective leader, not everyone knows how, or even what that means. However, there are five basic leadership skills that can help you develop into a great leader that everyone would enjoy working with. While leadership is a continuous learning process, we recommend these give major skills before worrying about other skills that can be developed later.
First, effective leadership skills revolve around good communication skills. I do not care what you have heard before, if you cannot communicate with others you cannot be a leader. Regardless of whether you communicate in person, over the phone, or even using e-mail you need to be able to communicate with others well in order to be successful. If you cannot get your point across easily and effectively then you will not be very good as a leader. We recommend always working on this leadership skill no matter what.
Another important aspect of effective leadership skills is the ability to realize that as a leader not everyone will like you. You are not supposed to be friends with everyone when you are the boss. Leaders must often choose between doing the right thing for a project, and keeping their friends happy. Realize that your friends will not always agree with everything you have to say. Great leaders manage to work it out anyways, but most people have a lot of trouble with mixing business and friendship. We recommend avoiding this as much as possible so you do not run into issues.
Effective leadership skills also include the ability to make decisions on your own without permission all of the time. You must be willing to get out there and make a decision and stand behind it. Even if you made the wrong decision, you still took the chance to make that decision and that says something. You have time to improve your decision making skills later. Nevertheless, effective leadership skills demand that you be willing to take a risk at times.
Additionally you should be able to inspire people to excel. If the people you work with are counting the minutes until they can leave instead of doing their best then you need to work on this skill. Your people should desire to only work harder, not watch the clock harder. Come up with ways to encourage creative thinking and dedication to their jobs.
Another effective leadership skill is the ability to develop your own emotional intelligence. If you cannot develop your own skills, then how can you possibly help your team develop theirs? It is simply impossible. Be willing to admit that you still have room to grow and your team will be more likely to work with you. One of the hardest parts about being a leader is admitting that you are not perfect and that you have room to improve as well.
Remember, these five effective leadership skills are just some of the most essential. This is not a complete list of all skills needed. There are other skills that aid in being the best leader possible as well, but we recommend mastering these first before attempting others.
The more you improve your leadership skills, the more profitable you become for yourself.
